The Single Tracker: Common Questions

What is the Single Tracker and what makes it Urban Cycling Apparel's most popular MTB short?

The Single Tracker is Urban Cycling Apparel's flagship mountain bike cargo short — a baggy-fit trail short built around the needs of real trail riding rather than a road cycling aesthetic. It combines deep zippered cargo pockets that secure your phone and tools through rough terrain, a seamless single-panel under construction that eliminates the inner seam rubbing that plagues standard shorts on long rides, water-resistant Cordura fabric with quick-dry wicking, and double-stitched panels throughout for durability where trail abuse is heaviest. It is available with or without the G-Tex padded undershorts depending on whether you want integrated chamois padding or prefer to ride your own liner. The combination of functional cargo storage, chafe-free construction, and durable fabric at an accessible price point is what has made it the brand's consistent best-seller.

Should I order the Single Tracker with or without the padded undershorts?

This comes down to your riding style and what you already own. If you do not have a separate padded liner and you ride for more than 45 minutes at a stretch, order with the G-Tex padded undershorts — saddle comfort on longer trail rides without any chamois padding deteriorates quickly and is one of the most common reasons new mountain bikers cut rides short. If you already own quality bib shorts or a dedicated padded liner that you prefer, order without — the outer shell alone is lighter and the fit is cleaner. The G-Tex undershorts are detachable, so you are not locked into wearing them every ride. Riders who do occasional shorter trail laps without padding and longer backcountry days with it find the with-undershorts option gives the most flexibility across different ride types.

What is the G-Tex padded undershort and how is it different from a standard liner?

The G-Tex padded undershorts use an antibacterial chamois pad that is ergonomically shaped for the mountain bike riding position — a more upright, dynamic posture than road cycling where riders shift weight forward, backward, and side to side constantly through technical terrain. The antibacterial treatment matters specifically for MTB use because mountain biking generates more sweat across a wider range of body positions than road riding, and a liner that develops bacterial odor quickly becomes unpleasant to use repeatedly. The G-Tex pad is also designed to wick moisture actively rather than absorbing it, which means it does not become heavy and clammy during sustained climbs or hot conditions. The ergonomic shaping focuses padding density at the sit bone contact zones rather than distributing it uniformly, which reduces bulk in areas where thickness causes friction rather than comfort.

What is the seamless under panel and why does it matter for trail riding?

The under panel is the fabric section that contacts your inner thigh and the saddle area during riding — the zone most responsible for chafing on longer trail sessions. Standard cargo shorts typically construct this panel from multiple pieces of fabric joined by seams, which creates raised seam lines that rub against skin repeatedly over the course of a ride. The Single Tracker uses a single-panel construction for the under section — one continuous piece of fabric with no interior seam running through the contact zone. All panels and pockets are double-stitched, but the stitching is flat rather than raised, which keeps internal surfaces smooth against the skin. On a two-hour trail ride at Coler or Slaughter Pen in Bentonville, this difference is felt. On a longer all-day backcountry ride, it determines whether you finish the ride comfortably or spend the last hour managing irritation.

What is Cordura fabric and why is it used in MTB shorts?

Cordura is a brand name for a family of high-tenacity nylon and polyester fabrics originally developed for military and outdoor applications where abrasion resistance, tear strength, and durability under repeated stress are critical. In MTB shorts, Cordura's advantage is that it withstands the specific abuse trail riding inflicts — brush contact, rock scrapes, saddle friction, and repeated washing without losing its structural integrity the way lower-grade nylon degrades over time. The water-resistant treatment on the Single Tracker's Cordura shell sheds light moisture from wet trail conditions and muddy splatter, keeping the outer fabric from absorbing water and becoming heavy during early-morning or post-rain rides. It will not keep you dry in sustained rain but handles the typical trail moisture exposure that Ozarks riding involves across spring and fall seasons.

How do the Single Tracker shorts fit and what size should I order?

The Single Tracker runs small — this is the most consistent feedback from buyers across all retail channels, and it is worth taking seriously before ordering. If you are at the top of a size range or between sizes, order up one size from your normal measurement. The shorts use a baggy trail fit — relaxed through the seat and thigh to allow the full range of body motion that technical MTB riding requires — rather than a slim or athletic cut. The sizing is marked by waist measurement: Small covers 26 to 28 inches, Medium 29 to 32, Large 33 to 35, XL 36 to 38, 2XL 39 to 41, and 3XL 42 to 45 inches. For reference, a rider who typically wears a 32-inch waist jean should consider ordering a Medium and evaluating fit before assuming standard sizing applies. Urban Cycling Apparel ships from Webb City, Missouri and accepts returns within its standard policy window.

The AQS810W (5208 module) series is one of Casio's best, in terms of being durable, reliable and problem-free.
Color: Green, Style: Modern
This is my second AQS810W... my first is about five years old, and it's black with white lettering. The "Tough Solar" and "Illuminator" are long-gone, rinsed away by automotive degreasers and other auto repair chemicals, but I like it better without those pronouncements, anyway. Army Green, in my opinion, is an excellent color on this watch. The fact that this is not at all a glossy watch, but a matte (or semi-gloss?) finish makes the color attractively subtle. I like it even more than the black. Other than the color, though, it's the exact same watch I've been very happy with for the last five years. Easy to setup, rugged and sturdy, just the right size (for me) and an industrial, utilitarian look. This is a very comfortable watch to wear - light in weight, flexible band, no sharp edges or uncomfortable shapes. I spent a few weeks trying to decide what watch I was going to get, and I came to the conclusion that being solar-powered was my highest priority, followed by being quickly readable. Perhaps it is just me, but I can read a analog watch faster than a digital one - just a quick glance. I kept coming back the Casio's AQS810W series, and it came down to the darker, matte-finished colors. Having said all of that, this series of Casio watches is virtually trouble-free. Read the reviews! VERY FEW failures, defects, water intrusions. People who don't like this series of watches either find them incomprehensible to set or are unhappy with the small digital display or the lack of a backlight for the analog dial. The watches themselves are largely bulletproof, possessing anvil-like reliability and durability. They even have a feature that if the watch is dropped or knocked around too hard, and the analog hands get out of sync with the digital display, you can quickly and easily re-sync them. This series is one of Casio's best, in terms of being problem-free. Yes, they have acrylic crystals, not mineral glass, and they do scratch. Simply buff the scratches out, and it is as good as new. Worried about the band breaking or falling apart? On a regular basis, take the watch into the shower and scrub the whole thing with an old toothbrush and some shampoo. Not only will it be clean and look great, but removing the body oils, sweat and salts makes the bands last and last. That's the secret to getting Casio resin bands to live long lives. The analog dial is not lit, but neither is the dial on my Rolex or Omega. Just find a light source to reflect on the hands, and you're in business. Just like we've done for many years. Anyway, you can tell I am a fan. Buy with confidence, but download the pdf version of the Casio 5208 module operating instructions, and it'll be easier to set up the watch if you aren't very tech savvy. If you like the way this series of watches looks, then I'm pretty confident you'll be very happy with your purchase. Have fun!

Great everyday watch
Color: Green, Style: Modern
I still own an older, cheaper Casio from 1994 and it'd been through the wringer. 130' of depth and banging onto a shipwreck couldn't even kill it Paint splashes and scratches to the face have made the dial harder to read but it still works. Even the battery change every 4 years is simple and cheap and in short, I CANNOT KILL THIS FREAKIN' WATCH. While the old watch still works, it's a little dated. Thus I looked into a newer, updated model of Casio watch for the next decade or so. This model caught my eye with a simple analog interface (Hate Digital watches), but still offered features such as an alarm, Stop-Watch, Timer, Alarm and even charged via Solar to eliminate even the battery replacement. I love this new watch. Good looks with a easy to read Analog face in dual colors (White for minutes, blaze orange for hours) and even glows in the dark. The controls are simple enough and I use both the Stopwatch and Timer on a near daily basis. Probably the sole drawback is the size of the digital readout. It could be a little larger, but maybe that's age creeping up on me. Altogether a darn good everyday watch that has decent looks, practicality and should last quite a long time.

Tough, Durable, Water Resistant Watch Suitable for Outdoor Use
Color: Green, Style: Modern
I normally don't write many reviews; however, this watch is an exception. First, it is a $40 watch. On that premise, it will not have the Carbon Core associated with a GShock watch or an atomic clock function. It does do the following REALLY well: 1) You set the clock once, and it keeps that exact time. 2) It is very water resistant. I spent a full 6 days, 12 hours a day, at Summer Camp getting BSA lifeguard certified. I never took off the watch. I swam 3 miles, dove 12 to 13 feet down retrieve dozens of 10 lbs anchors, and swam out to retrieved three exhausted swimmers. This watch didn't miss a beat. 3) The crystal can take a beating without scratching. The watch hit several canoe gunnels, face first and I can't find a scratch 4) it is very light weight and quite comfortable. I forgot I was wearing watch, even when doing water rescue exercises and people grabbing my wrists and the watch. 5) The analog watch hands are big and easy to read. The digital display does take a few hours, for me, to fully understand how to program and get used to it. However, I can now easily cycle through day, date, and digital time. I believe that Casio keeps the digital seconds displayed because the analog hands lack a second hand. That may take some getting used to, but I learned to appreciate it. In the end, this $40 watch does everything I need. I was looking for a durable watch with analog hands I could use for Boy Scouts, and the green model fit the bill. If you travel, which I don't, you have the World Time feature, but you must determine for yourself what features to prioritize. For me it was: 1) Durable 2) Long life, Tough Solar for the win 3) Easy to read analog hands 4) very water resistant. I am not a diver, and 15 feet depth is the most I would expect to dive.
